To take full advantage of this mushroom's beneficial compounds, it must be hot-water extracted. Popular methods of hot water extraction include making a tea by breaking the mushroom up with a hammer into small nuggets (approx. 0.25 - 0.50" in diameter) and adding to a tea bag or french press and steeping in boiling hot water. The extracted mushroom fruiting body is not intended to be consumed. Chaga can be extracted 2-3 times before it should be disposed, or until the water does not turn dark or black anymore.
